FAQs
What is Iyengar Yoga?
Iyengar Yoga is a method of teaching developed by living master BKS Iyengar who is nearly 90 years old (and still practicing). It is based on the ancient Indian discipline where awareness of the body, mind, and spirit are connected by the breath. Mr. Iyengar has been instrumental in introducing yoga to the western world. His method is characterized by careful attention to alignment in the body so that the asanas or postures can be learned safely without injury while providing the most freedom of movement and relaxation. He was the first to introduce the use of props such as blankets, walls, blocks, and straps which allow students to learn the asanas regardless of their flexibility or strength.
Iyengar yoga teachers are highly trained over many years and study all aspects of yoga as well as human anatomy. The method is progressive taking the student first through fundamentals before attempting more difficult asanas. Visit www.bksiyengar.com to learn more.

Level 2: Pre-requisite: a firm foundation in the Iyengar method including standing poses and shoulder stand. Sirsasana, backbends, full arm balance will be taught along with other intermediate poses. Level 1 poses will continue to be refined.
Level 3: Students well practiced in the Iyengar method who can hold Sirsasana for 5 minutes away from the wall, push up into Urdhva Dhanurasana, come into Adho Mukha Vrksasana independently. A regular home practice is well established.

“What I appreciate most about Amy’s teaching is the way she combines her great skill with insight and warmth. In a large class she is able to work with many people wherever they are. Amy shares her deep understanding of the point of yoga. By that I mean it’s not just about getting a pose right (whatever that means) – it’s about how working towards greater external skills is a reflection of and a way to impact what is going on inside. I love the way we start and end in silence. I love the fact we’re not rushing – there’s always time for another breath, time to settle a little more deeply.” — Alisa D.
