What is Iyengar Yoga?

Iyengar yoga has been developed by living master BKS Iyengar, author of the classic book "Light on Yoga". It is based on the yoga sutras of Patangali written nearly 2500 years ago, where awareness of body, mind, and spirit are connected by the breath. Certified Iyengar Yoga instructors are highly trained practitioners who have dedicated many years of study in all aspects of yoga. *The method is progressive taking the student first through fundamentals before attempting more difficult asanas. *It is characterized by careful attention to alignment providing the most freedom of movement and relaxation; safety from injury is emphasized. *Iyengar was first to introduce the use of props such as blankets, walls, blocks, chairs, and belts in order to make yoga accessible to everyone regardless of age, strength, or flexibility. Iyengar yoga therapeutics have been developed to deal with all special needs. *Yoga philosphy is skillfully woven into the asana teachings. It is "meditation in action". *Students are lead through asanas (poses) to increase strength, flexibility, develop awareness, and to calm the mind.
